Form 1
1st grade - 2nd grade - 3rd grade
1st grade - 2nd grade - 3rd grade
In Form 1, our youngest students begin their journey with a wide and gentle feast—a rhythm of stories, explorations, and hands-on experiences that meet them right where they are. Throughout the year, they’ll hold meaningful work across many subjects: world geography, science, natural history, literature, PE, drawing, language study, and rotating electives. Lessons are short and purposeful, honoring each child’s capacity for wonder and attention. We believe that every child—whether still learning to read, processing slowly, or bounding ahead—deserves full access to the living ideas offered in a Charlotte Mason education.
The teachers/directors are basing these subjects, Tuesday offerings, and homework in accordance with Charlotte Mason timetables provided by The Charlotte Mason Institute/The Alveary. You can view these scheduling resources here:
Form 1 is a season of planting—where habits take root, relationships begin to grow, and learning is woven through delight and discovery. These early years aren’t about performance or acceleration, but about laying a foundation of attention, wonder, and joyful effort.
Over these three years, students begin to:
Hear and Tell: Children will grow in the habit of full attention and begin to give back what they hear in their own words through oral narration, conversation, and storytelling.
See and Delight: Students will practice observing closely—whether in nature, picture study, or daily life—and begin putting those observations into words, drawings, and thoughtful responses.
Do and Make: Hands will be busy with meaningful work: drawing, handicrafts, early writing, and other efforts that develop skill, focus, and confidence.
Grow Together: Children will learn to live in community—speaking kindly, taking turns, helping one another, and contributing to shared work and play.
Worship and Wonder: Through Scripture, song, and prayer, students will encounter living ideas of who God is and what it means to grow as persons made in His image.
This year at The Grove, Form 1 students will experience many different classes that allow them to grow deeper roots in goodness and truth. The teachers of these classes have intentionally designed their class visions, book choices, and at-home assignments based on the specific class given to them this year. Below, you can read about what each class will experience this school year in Form 1 and what hopes the teachers have for their students this year. You can also see the Form 1 supply/book list and a list of the expected homework at home this year.
Geography:
Form 1 students this year will study world geography! We will spend weeks in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. This year, we hope that the students explore the culture, people, animals, and landscapes of some amazing countries, while also learning key geography and map-reading concepts.
Literature:
Learners will be immersed in rich language as they explore a variety of literary genres throughout the year. This year, they will explore two fantasy novels, a Middle Eastern historical fiction novel, as well as a unit on concrete poetry and an enriching introduction to the life and language of William Shakespeare. Writing in this class is mostly imitative through copy work, as students gain language for parts of speech and punctuation as they copy great writing models from their literature to internalize patterns and style of various forms of writing. Oral narration is the primary mode for retelling ideas and the habit of sequencing those ideas.
Science:
Students will explore habitats and meet some less familiar creatures from those habitats, such as bats, spiders, and seeds. With Natural History, students will learn methodically about the variety of creatures around them, including insects and birds. We envision that Form 1 Natural History could be a sweet connection point for your family to rally around your younger children and have them lead you into studies of nature. These lessons will be greatly enriched with the use of the family nature study each week.
PE:
This year in PE, students will get the opportunity to play ribbon ninja, flag football, learn some of the classic wedding line dances, work on their fitness in our special fitness test, and, of course, crush running club practice for our first-ever Turkey Trot. Our goal is to cultivate a love for moving their bodies and learning to try new things.
Drawing
Form I and Form II will journey through the history of art and creative expression from its earliest appearance in the caves of Lascaux, France. Then we will progress through hieroglyphs, illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, stained glass, and cathedral architecture. After the Christmas holiday, we will look at the transformation of painting through an increase in skill level, painting mediums, as well as the lives of influential artists such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Keith Haring.
Electives:
Our 4th Block electives allow for our Form 1 students to sample a bit more of the feast with mamas leading them into a variety of handcrafts and skill-based electives throughout the year.
The supply fee for each Form 1 student is $60 for the year. This includes all supplies for book clubs, cultural experiences, and hands-on science activities.
