Form 2
4th grade - 5th grade - 6th grade
4th grade - 5th grade - 6th grade
This year in Form 2, students will engage in a rich and varied feast of subjects—from literature and history to science, geography, math, and the arts—designed to nourish both mind and character. We expect all students to fully participate in every aspect of this Charlotte Mason education. We recognize and honor the variety of learners in our community. A Charlotte Mason education is not reserved for a particular kind of child—it is for everyone. Whether a student reads fluently, writes independently, or uniquely processes the world, they are invited into full participation. Accommodations may support how a student engages, but no child is exempt from the living ideas and meaningful work offered here. Accommodations may be made to support individual needs, but exemption from core subjects is not part of the design of our community. Every child is invited to hold the whole in the way that’s right for them.
The teachers/directors are basing these subjects, Tuesday offerings, and homework in accordance with Charlotte Mason timetables provided by The Charlotte Mason Institute/The Alveary. You can view these scheduling resources here:
Form 2 is a season of steady stretching, where students begin to hold more of the feast with growing confidence. These 4th-6th grade years aren’t about rushing ahead, but about settling deeper into the habits, ideas, and relationships that make this education so life-giving.
Over these three years, our hope is that the Form 2 students will:
Read and Tell – Strengthen the habit of attention and understanding through reading living books and narrating both aloud and in writing.
Think and Communicate – Grow in the ability to express ideas clearly, listen well, and make connections across subjects and life.
Observe and Explore – Practice careful observation and curiosity through nature study, science, special studies, and time outdoors.
Create and Contribute – Work with purpose and imagination through writing, practical arts, drama, and shared projects.
Grow in Habit and Relationship – Build responsibility, friendship, and spiritual depth through meaningful work, community life, and the Spiritual Foundations class.
This year at The Grove, Form 2 students will experience many different classes that allow them to grow deeper roots in goodness and truth. The teachers of these classes have intentionally designed their class visions, book choices, and at-home assignments based on the specific class given to them this year. Below, you can read about what each class will experience this school year in Form 2 and what hopes the teachers have for their students this year. You can also see the Form 1 supply/book list and a list of the expected homework at home this year.
Geography:
This year in Form 2 geography, we’ll dig into the wild, true stories of real explorers and the incredible places they traveled. Class time will be all about hands-on map work and creative projects, while the readings at home will help bring their journeys—and the world—into focus.
Literature:
In Form 2 literature this year, we’ll read epic tales together in class and enjoy a mix of timeless classics and lively modern stories at home. Through these living books, students will form relationships with noble ideas, grow in imagination, and learn to delight in the beauty and power of well-told stories. We will begin each day with a poetry lesson and all ow the students to find their homes within the pages of books.
Language Study:
In Form 2 language study, students will continue building strong habits through copywork and dictation drawn from our readings, helping them grow in spelling, punctuation, and the rhythm of beautiful writing. They’ll begin submitting one written narration each week for gentle feedback and will add a historical recitation—drawn from the time period of our history readings—to deepen their connections with the past. Grammar study will take place at home this year, allowing space in class to focus on thoughtful expression and the art of language.
Science:
Learners engage with the chemical nature of things, meteorology, and space exploration. Students will practice beginning lab skills and expand their use of graphing. All general science instruction and lab work will be completed in class. A part of Form 2 Science is Natural History. Learners encounter botanical families, endangered species, invasive species, and secondary succession as they consider how man interacts with and thinks about the natural world. All natural science instruction will be completed at home. Students are also invited to nature journal at home each week with their families. 6th graders are also expected to read biographies of three scientists over the course of the year.
Book of Centuries:
A Book of Centuries is a timeline notebook used to help students visualize and organize historical events and people over 100 years. It serves as a tool for students to track their historical learning, see connections between events, and create a personal record of their studies. Students begin recording in this book in 4th grade and use it through 12th grade.
PE:
This year in PE, students will get the opportunity to play ribbon ninja, flag football, learn some of the classic wedding line dances, work on their fitness in our special fitness test, and, of course, crush running club practice for our first-ever Turkey Trot. Our goal is to cultivate a love for moving their bodies and learning to try new things.
Drawing
Form I and Form II will journey through the history of art and creative expression from its earliest appearance in the caves of Lascaux, France. Then we will progress through hieroglyphs, illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, stained glass, and cathedral architecture. After the Christmas holiday, we will look at the transformation of painting through an increase in skill level, painting mediums, as well as the lives of influential artists such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Keith Haring.
Electives:
Our 4th block is all about building character, connection, and confidence. Students will meet in small boys’ and girls’ groups for Spiritual Foundations, where male and female teachers invest in them through Scripture, conversation, and prayer. In drama, we’ll take a slow and thoughtful approach as we grow in expression, empathy, and understanding. Each term will also bring new hands-on electives—ranging from handicrafts to life skills—that invite students to try something new and build competence through meaningful work.
Spiritual Foundations:
In this second year of our Spiritual Foundations class, students will meet in boys’ and girls’ groups each week, guided by a team of mothers and fathers throughout the year. The boys will work through Primal Path, a course that helps them understand the key transitions God invites boys to walk through on the journey to becoming men of God. The girls will study Maidens by His Design, exploring how their hearts, minds, and bodies are beautifully woven together in their God-given identity as young women. At-home discussion questions or narration prompts will often be shared in Syllabird to encourage continued conversation with families.
The supply fee for each Form 2 student is $80. This fee covers the cost of all science lab experiments, geography projects, book clubs, and classroom needs for Form 2.
